Scalp serum

How to apply scalp serum: a step-by-step guide

A woman in a soft grey t-shirt with both hands at her parted dark hair, fingertips on the scalp, by a bright window

How to apply scalp serum, in short: start from a clean scalp, dry or towel-dried, part the hair into rows about an inch apart, place a few drops along each part, then massage with the pads of your fingers for one to two minutes and leave it on. The directions on your bottle come before any general rule, including these.

It takes about three minutes. The details are where it goes right or wrong: how clean the scalp needs to be, how many drops count as a few, which applicator to trust, and what to do with curls or braids. Here is each one, with the reasoning, so you can adapt it to your own hair.

The short version

  1. Read the directions. Leave-on, rinse-off or pre-wash decides everything else.
  2. Start clean. A freshly washed scalp, or at least one without a build-up of dry shampoo and styling product.
  3. Towel-dry or dry. Damp is fine. Dripping is not.
  4. Part the hair with the tail of a comb, starting at the front hairline.
  5. Place a few drops along the part, on skin rather than hair.
  6. Move over about an inch and part again. Three to five rows covers most heads.
  7. Massage with your fingertip pads for one to two minutes.
  8. Let it settle before brushing, styling or heat.

Should your scalp be clean before you apply scalp serum?

Ideally, yes. The scalp is some of the oiliest skin on the body: sebaceous glands reach 400 to 900 per square centimetre on the scalp and forehead, far more than on the limbs.1 A day or two after washing, a serum lands on that oil rather than on skin, and the two together sit on the roots as a film.

Dry shampoo adds to it. The American Academy of Dermatology says dry shampoo absorbs oil but does not clean hair, and can accumulate on the scalp until shampoo and water remove it.2 A liquid dropped onto powder and oil clumps rather than spreads.

That does not mean wash day only. If the scalp is not visibly oily and nothing has gone onto it since you washed, a leave-on serum can go on as normal. Some directions are specific: our Max Density is directed to a clean scalp, so it belongs on the morning after a wash, not on day three of dry shampoo.

Dry or damp?

Both work for most water-based serums. A towel-dried scalp lets the serum spread easily; a dry scalp gives cleaner parts and more precise placement. A dripping scalp does not work: water dilutes the serum and carries it down the lengths. The trade-offs are in scalp serum before or after the shower, on wet or dry hair.

How to part your hair for scalp serum

Parting is the step most people skip, and the one that decides whether the serum reaches skin.

  1. Start at the front. Use the tail of a comb to draw a part from the hairline back towards the crown, wherever your usual part sits.
  2. Apply along the line, working from front to back.
  3. Move over about an inch and draw a new part beside the last one. Apply again.
  4. Work out to one side, then return to the centre and work out to the other.
  5. Finish at the crown, where hair often sits in a swirl. Short parts that radiate out from the swirl, like spokes, are easier there than straight lines.

A hand mirror held behind you helps with the crown and the back, until you can do them by feel. Keep drops back from the very edge of the hairline so nothing runs towards your eyes. Coverage does not need to be perfect, because the massage moves the serum between the rows.

Drops that land on hair stay in hair. The part is the whole technique: it is how a few drops get past the hair to the skin underneath.

How much scalp serum to use

Less than you think. "A few drops" means across the head, spread along the parts, not a few per row on top of a full dropper. Start with one or two drops every few inches along each part. After massage the scalp should feel evenly damp, not wet, and nothing should run.

Drops are not a fixed measure. Their size depends on the dropper, the angle it is held at and the liquid itself. One study of eye drop bottles measured an average of about 40 microlitres per drop from the stock bottle, and notes earlier work finding that different bottles deliver anywhere from 20 to 70 microlitres.3 Five drops from one bottle is not five drops from another, so judge by how the scalp feels rather than by the count.

Signs of too much: liquid pooling at the roots, product on the lengths, roots that look flat once dry. The fix is fewer drops next time; every cause of that heavy look is in why a scalp serum can make hair greasy.

Dropper, nozzle, spray or roller: which applicator works best

Each applicator changes how precisely the product lands, and one of them is not an applicator at all.

Applicator How it delivers Good for Watch for
Glass dropper or pipette Drop by drop, exactly where you place it Precise placement along parts, on most hair types Drawing up a full pipette and emptying it in one spot
Nozzle or applicator tip A thin line through a narrow spout Braids, locs, twists and dense curls, where the tip can reach between sections Squeezing too hard; it is easy to overdo
Spray or mist A fine spread over an area Very short hair, or covering a wide area quickly Much of the mist lands on hair rather than skin
Roller ball A thin film rolled along the skin The hairline and the part line Rolling over hair instead of parted skin
Needle roller Punctures the skin with small needles Not a way to apply a cosmetic serum The FDA has not approved these devices for delivering cosmetics into the skin

That last row matters, because needle rollers are often sold next to scalp serums. The FDA describes microneedling devices as creating many small puncture holes in the skin, lists bleeding, bruising and infection among their risks, and states that they are not approved for delivering cosmetics into the skin.4 A serum is for the surface of the scalp. If an applicator has a roller, check it is a smooth ball, not a needle head.

How to massage scalp serum in

Massage moves the serum off the parts and across the scalp, so a few drops cover the skin between the rows.

  • Use the pads of your fingers, not the nails. Nails scratch, and a scratched scalp is a poor place to put anything.
  • Move the skin, not the hair. Press lightly and make small circles so the scalp shifts over the skull. Sliding your fingers through the hair just drags serum onto the lengths.
  • Work in sections: front to back, then the sides, then the crown and the nape.
  • One to two minutes is enough. It is what the directions on both of our serums ask for.

What to do after applying scalp serum

Let it settle

Give a water-based serum a few minutes to dry down before you brush, touch the roots or tie your hair up. Damp roots handled straight away go flat.

Styling and heat

Style as normal once the scalp feels dry to the touch. If you use heat, the dermatology advice is the same with or without a serum: limit blow-drying and hot tools, use low or medium heat settings and a product to protect your hair from the heat,5 and use your tools less often where you can.6 Heat protectant belongs on the lengths, where the heat lands. Keep it, along with leave-in conditioner and oils, off the scalp you have just treated.

When you can wash it out

A leave-on serum stays on until your next wash, and some set a minimum: Max Density's directions say not to wash hair for at least one to two hours after applying it. Max Growth has nothing to rinse out. If a shower is coming soon, apply afterwards. How many times a day or week to repeat this is in how often to use a scalp serum.

How to apply scalp serum on different hair types

Fine or straight hair

Fine hair shows every extra drop, so use the low end of the dose. The AAD notes that people with straight hair and an oily scalp may want to shampoo every day,5 and a freshly washed scalp is the best base for a leave-on serum. Choose a water-based formula without oils near the top of the list on the back; what a water-based hair serum is, and how to tell from the bottle shows how to check.

Thick or dense hair

The challenge is reaching skin at all. Use more parts rather than more drops, and clip each finished section out of the way so you do not apply twice in one place. A nozzle tip is easier than a dropper here.

Curly and coily hair

Textured hair is usually washed less often: the AAD's guidance for dry, textured, curly or thick hair is to shampoo when needed, at least once every two to three weeks.5 Part while the hair is damp with a wide-tooth comb, which is how the AAD advises combing curly hair,6 and use the sections you already make on wash day. Keep the serum on the scalp so it does not disturb the curl pattern, and press rather than rake when you massage.

Braids, locs, twists and protective styles

The parts between braids are ready-made application lines. Run a nozzle tip or dropper along each one, a drop or two at a time, and press it in with a fingertip rather than rubbing. Go lighter than on loose hair, because product that stays in for a week or more has time to build up. The AAD's tips for Black hair recommend washing once a week or every other week partly to prevent build-up of hair care products, and add that braids, cornrows and weaves should never be too tight: if styling hurts, ask the stylist to stop and redo it.7

Layering scalp serum with other products

Products for skin go on skin, products for the fibre go on the fibre, and the scalp product goes on before anything that coats.

  1. Shampoo and conditioner, in the shower.
  2. Scalp serum, on the scalp, massaged in.
  3. Leave-in conditioner, on the mid-lengths and ends.
  4. Heat protectant, on the lengths, if you are using heat.
  5. Styling product, where you need it.
  6. Hair oil, a drop or two on the ends, last.

Dry shampoo is the one scalp product that comes later: serum, let it dry, then dry shampoo. The full sequence for oils and serums is in hair oil or serum: which one goes on before the other.

Using two scalp serums? Do not stack them. Space them out, one in the morning and one in the evening, which is how we suggest using ours.

Patch test before you start

Any new leave-on product deserves a test, botanical or not. The AAD's method is to apply the product twice a day for seven to ten days to a quarter-sized spot where it will not be rubbed or washed away, such as the underside of the arm or the bend of the elbow, using the amount you would normally use.8 If the skin turns red, itchy or swollen, wash the product off and do not use it again.8

If the scalp reacts once you have started, the FDA's advice is to stop using the product and contact your healthcare provider.9 Introduce one new product at a time, so you know which one it was.

Common mistakes when applying scalp serum

  • Dropping it on the crown and rubbing. Most of it ends up in the hair.
  • A full dropper in one spot. The excess sits on the roots around it.
  • Applying over dry shampoo. Serum and powder make paste.
  • Applying just before a shower. A leave-on serum washed away ten minutes later never had time on the scalp.
  • Treating the lengths. A scalp serum is for skin. Ends want a conditioner or an oil.

Common questions

Where should scalp serum be applied?

On the skin of the scalp, along parts you make with a comb, rather than on the hair. Most people cover the top of the head, the part line and the hairline, then the crown and sides. Keep drops slightly back from the front edge so nothing runs towards the eyes, and let the massage spread the serum between the rows.

How many drops of scalp serum should I use?

Start with a few drops across the whole head, one or two every few inches along each part, and follow your bottle's directions. Drop size varies between droppers, so judge by feel: the scalp should be evenly damp after massage, not wet. If product reaches the lengths or roots look flat once dry, use fewer next time.

Do you rub scalp serum in or just leave it?

Massage it in, then leave it. One to two minutes of small circles with the fingertip pads spreads a few drops across the scalp between the parts. After that, a leave-on serum stays on until your next wash. Rubbing the hair itself, rather than moving the skin, just pulls the serum onto the lengths.

Can I apply scalp serum on unwashed hair?

Often, yes, if the scalp is not oily and has no dry shampoo or styling product on it. A clean scalp is the best base, because a serum on top of a day or two of oil can look greasy. Some serums are directed to a clean scalp specifically, so check the bottle; Max Density is one of them.

Can I put scalp serum on and go to bed?

Yes, if it is a leave-on serum and the directions do not say otherwise. Give it a few minutes to dry down before your head touches the pillow, so it stays on the scalp rather than transferring to the pillowcase. An evening serum with nothing to rinse out, like Max Growth, fits this slot well.

Can I use a scalp serum and a hair oil together?

Yes, as long as each goes where it belongs. The serum goes on the scalp before anything that coats; the oil goes on the ends, last, a drop or two at a time. Avoid putting oil on top of the serum at the roots, which brings back the heavy look a water-based serum avoids.

Ours

Both of our serums are water-based, with no oils, no silicones and no added fragrance, and both are directed the same way: a few drops on the scalp, then one to two minutes of massage. Max Density goes onto a clean scalp in the morning; Max Growth goes on in the evening.

Where this step sits in the rest of your routine is in a simple daily hair routine, and where a scalp serum fits in it. For timing, read scalp serum before or after the shower and how often to use a scalp serum.

However carefully it is applied, a cosmetic works on how hair and scalp look and feel. A product sold to restore hair growth is, in US law, a drug.10
